BIOGRAPHY OF CAROLYN BESSETTE

Carolyn  Bessette was born in White Plains NY to William Bessette and Ann Messina Bessette. She had two sisters  Lisa and Lauren Bessette (twins) that were 14 months older than her.  Carolyn was eight years old when William and Ann divorced. Ann later married Dr. Richard Freeman, an orthopedic surgeon and moved with her daughters  to  Greenwich, Connecticut.  Carolyn attended school  in Greenwich until her mother thought Carolyn was becoming a hand full and hanging around the wrong groups of kids at school. Ann being a teacher herself, then enrolled Carolyn at St, Mary's.

Carolyn later
attended Boston University where she majored in Elementary Education, and dated hockey player John Cullen. Carolyn graduated in 1988. She later said that she never became a teacher because she didn't want to be responsible for so many people's children and the job wouldn't have been provocative enough for her. She started work as a waitress while in college after she spent all of her allowance on clothes. Once the spending became too much her mother and step-father insisted that she get a job, and cut her money off.  After waitressing she started work at the Lyons group out of Boston., and then ended up working for a Calvin Klein store in the Boston area. Eventually Carolyn became a publicist for fashion designer Calvin Klein in New York City, where she met and dated Michael Bergin, and became friends with Kelly Klein. Carolyn Bessette and John Kennedy Jr. were married on 21 September 1996 on Cumberland Island, Georgia, and honeymooned in Greece and Turkey.

The couple, along with Bessette's older sister Lauren Bessette, were killed when a small airplane piloted by Kennedy crashed near Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts on 16 July 1999 at 9:40 p.m EST The cause of the crash is not know, though the NTSB officials state that spatial disorientation may have led to a graveyard spiral. Upon further investigation, it was noted that Kennedy was given false weather reports stating that visibility was clear, when in fact conditions were going to get worse. Last statement by the NTSB was for "no recommendation given" meaning they could not solely state that pilot error was the cause.
